#MinnesotaMonday - Surprise Connection with an Historic Location
With our current stay-at-home order, my family has been picking up some new hobbies! My Dad’s favorite new activity is taking care of his sourdough starter and making lots of homemade bread. Recently, he bought a 25-pound bag of flour to support his new hobby.
After a second glance at the oversized bag, I noticed that “Ardent Mills” was written on it. I immediately made the Hastings connection and knew I had to highlight Ardent Mills and the Hastings Mill for our Minnesota Monday!
The Hastings Mill, currently owned and operated by Ardent Mills, was established in 1853. The original stonework is still visible! It was the first operating mill in the entire state of Minnesota and the first all-roller mill facility in the United States.
Initially powered by the Vermillion River, the Hastings Mill is home to several more industry firsts, including the invention of the milling purifier and patent barrel, according to Douglas J. Peckenpaugh from BNP Media. Locals will also tell you the mill is the birthplace of graham flour.
After making pizza dough and loaves of bread with my Dad this weekend, I feel more connected than ever despite our quarantine. And to think it started with a bag of flour!
Have a good week!
